Tarime sits in the northern region of Tanzania, nestled between the Serengeti and Lake Victoria. This remote area, occupied by multiple self-governing tribes, is dotted by farms ranging from 2-8 hectares (1 hectare=2.5 acres). These farmers make their living growing coffee and other cash crops as well as subsistence crops.
Up until the construction of the Muriba washing station in 2013, coffee in the Tarime was historically processed as naturals due to the terrain and dry climate. The addition of the washing station made it possible for farmers to deliver their coffee in cherry form which results in quicker payments and increased space on their land, since it reduced the need for drying beds. This coffee is received at the washing station, sorted, depulped, and then fermented underwater for 12-15 hours before being washed and dried on raised beds.
